Gardening pests like weeds, powdery mildew, and mosquitos can be deterred by natural home remedies made with ingredients found in your fridge or pantry.

Natural home remedies are loved by gardeners, environmentalists, pet owners and parents as they are much safer and cheaper than chemical and fungicide sprays found on the market.

Weed and Grass Killer

If you have cracks in your driveway or patio that are rapidly filling up with grass and weeds, this remedy is for you. With grass, you will see results within two hours; with various weeds, you will see results within a day or two.

For your weed and grass killer, mix the following ingredients together and spray or pour onto the weeds and grass.

4 cups of white vinegar

1/4 cup of table salt

2 teaspoons of dish detergent

Powdery Mildew Remedy

Powdery mildew is a fungus that grows on the leaves of infected plants and is one of the most common plant diseases. It can appear on most plants, but some that are especially susceptible include delphiniuims, phlox, roses, apples and cucumbers.

It is especially prevalent in areas of high humidity or where plants are too close together to allow for proper air circulation. It is also important to water plants from the bottom and not let water sit on the leaves.

Powdery mildew appears on the leaves in white, dusty-looking blotches. Most often, it is not fatal, but it does weaken your plants and should be taken care of.

For your powdery mildew remedy, mix together 1 part milk to 7 parts water. Put into a spray bottle and spray the leaves of infected plants in the morning until you see an improvement. You should start to see results within a week, depending on the severity.

Mosquito Repellent

Mosquitos can spoil your time in the garden, and if you are interested in a natural mosquito repellent, you can make one by diluting an essential oil. This is a great option for children and those who are sensitive to the harsh chemical sprays. The essential oil mix is distasteful and confusing to the mosquitos, lessening the likelihood of bites.

For your natural mosquito repellant, mix 20 drops of essential oil with two tablespoons of a carrier oil. Effective essential oils include citronella oil, lemon eucalyptus oil and castor oil. For the carrier oil, you can use olive oil, sunflower oil, or any cooking oil.

Once you have mixed the ingredients together, rub or spray onto skin, avoiding the eye area. You will need to reapply hourly or after excessive sweating. Store leftovers in a dark bottle away from the heat and sun.
